Abraxas is the second studio album by Santana, released 23 September 1970; a fusion of Latin rock, blues and jazz that topped the Billboard chart.^[raw/articles/wikipedia-abraxas-album.md]
The Hammond in it
Founding keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Rolie plays the Hammond B-3 as the band's harmonic glue: organ pads and answer phrases under Carlos Santana's lead guitar on "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Cómo Va", with the organ-vs-guitar call-and-response forming the album's core texture.^[raw/articles/wikipedia-abraxas-album.md] On "Incident at Neshabur" Rolie's keyboards are deliberately contrasted with guest pianist Alberto Gianquinto's jazz-influenced style.^[raw/articles/wikipedia-abraxas-album.md]
Rolie's approach — jazz-chord vocabulary inside percussion-driven grooves, the organ as a conversational partner rather than the solo star — extends the soul-jazz organ tradition into Latin rock (see hammond-landmark-albums).^[raw/articles/wikipedia-gregg-rolie.md]
