Leslie Overdrive (Denmark)
Danish four-piece organ-funk band formed in 2005 — named, in a one-line summary of the whole hammond-b3-plus-Leslie rig, after the sound itself: Hammond "funk", Leslie "soul". Lineup: Kapper-Dapper (drums), Craig "Zilla" Kristensen (bass), "Dynamite" Mads Nielsen (guitar), "Reverend" Kristian Jørgensen (Hammond organ).^[raw/articles/leslie-overdrive-blog-allmusic.md]
Story and records
- Kapper and Craig met in 2003 over "a mutual love of swirling Hammond"; with Kristian (from their cabaret project Funksovs) and Mads the band took its final shape in 2005.^[raw/articles/leslie-overdrive-blog-allmusic.md]
- Debut ...With the Hammond, In the Beauty (Hammondbeat HBL-007, 2007, EP/CD) — funk originals plus covers of The Beatles' "Drive My Car" and Jaco Pastorius' "The Chicken"; followed by the single "A Tad Askew" b/w "Oily" (AllMusic).^[raw/articles/leslie-overdrive-blog-allmusic.md]
They are the Scandinavian corner of the Hammondbeat roster, alongside Italy's Link Quartet and Switzerland's Men From S.P.E.C.T.R.E. — and their guitarist Mads Nielsen appears as a guest on Paolo 'Apollo' Negri's A Bigger Tomorrow.^[raw/articles/leslie-overdrive-blog-allmusic.md] The band's entire identity is an homage to the classic organ-trio-plus-Leslie format that jimmy-smith established.
